Supporting Individuals with Complex Needs (1 hour) (2026)

MC10-26

Free Masterclass

In this course, whether you are a new or seasoned DSP, you can expect to gain new knowledge and skills to better support individuals with complex needs.

This course begins with an exploration of the different levels of prompting and then guides participants to determine the right level of prompting to use. The next section helps participants to assess if an individual needs objects to communicate, and if so, how to provide objects to communicate throughout the day.

The course then dives into how partial participation and generalization can help individuals with complex needs take more ownership of skills and use learned skills in more contexts. The course ends with helping participants acquire methods to increase screen-based engagement so that an individual can communicate with others virtually and participate in screen-based educational and recreational programming.

This free 1-hour masterclass may be applied toward Ohio Department of Developmental Disabilities (DODD) annual provider certification renewal requirements, as applicable to the attendee's certification type.

Objectives of the Course:

  1. Determine the right level of prompting to use with an individual and continually adapt based on observations
  2. Assess if an individual needs objects to communicate, and if so, provide objects to communicate throughout the day
  3. Support an individual to take more ownership of tasks using partial participation strategies
  4. Identify areas where an individual needs to generalize skills and create a plan to do so
  5. Acquire methods to increase screen-based engagement so an individual can communicate with others virtually and participate in educational and recreational programming
